Reflection

The first difficulty I faced while writing the blog was figuring out how to delete extra areas and links in the blog. That was really the only problem I encountered. Something that I found while updating my blog was figuring out how to add pictures. I believe pictures add a more personalized element to the blog, so it was a nice benefit. Writing about math instead of solving a problem was a bit strange. I never expected to have to write in a math course, but here I am. I didn't mind it per say but I wouldn't consider writing about math to be fun. It was however interesting to find out that what I am learning now can be used after high school for certain careers. There is a point to all this.
I don't think this was the first time I uploaded a video to YouTube for a school assignment. I can't remember the class or assignment, but I've definitely done it before. It wasn't that hard to figure out though. This isn't the first time I've had to learn or do something online for a class. I didn't mind the assignment. There is nothing I can think of to improve it. The assignment is pretty solid. It wasn't hard commenting on other people's blogs. I did find it a little weird because I'm not used to it. I did enjoy looking at other people's blogs because it was nice seeing their personalities shine through on each of their posts.

I chose this problem because it shows an example of how math that we learn, like graphing and plotting points, can be used to wire cables on a bridge. Wires on a bridge insure that the bridge doesn't collapse and that it is safe to cross. Many architects have to use calculus to make sure that structures are built correctly, so they are safe to cross and don't collapse. Bridges have to be able to support a lot of weight which is why architects have to put wires across the bridge at certain points. This problem uses the given distance of the two towers to try and find the height of the cable and how far it should be from the center. The problem first finds the equation of the parabola by plugging in the points given and then it plugs in the height to find the distance from the center. The distance had be calculated because you need to make sure that all the wires are equidistant from the center. This makes sure the bridge is stable and safe to cross.

The solution and work is on slides 8 and 9. I chose this problem because it has never occurred to me that police would ever need to use calculus. I have always though of architects and engineers, but never even considered that other fields could use math. This problem uses substitution and logarithmic functions to determine time of death. The detective used the body temperatures of the rooms and victim's body and then plugged those numbers into two equations. Then the substitution was applied and logs were used. It is very cool to find out that the time of death can be determined through calculus and body temperature.

Hey, my name is Saida, I am currently a senior at Minnechaug Regional High School. My favorite activities to participate in include volleyball and basketball. I have been playing basketball for 9 years now and was a part of the Minnechaug basketball team during my freshman and sophomore year of high school. I started playing volleyball my freshman year of high school, and now I am co-captain of the varsity team. I also am a member of the Indoor and Outdoor track teams. Some clubs that I am involved in are National Honors Society, Key Club, and Peer Mentors. I believe that getting involved in activities helps with making new friends and keeping busy. My favorite foods include all things chocolate and pizza, and my favorite tv shows are Friends and How I Met Your Mother.

I am taking Applied Calc to broaden the knowledge that I obtained from Pre-Calc. I also took this class to prepare myself for future math courses in college. I think this course is challenging enough that it will make me work hard, but it isn't too hard to the point of being overwhelming, which I like. My goal in this class is to get an A- or higher. I also wish to achieve a basic understanding of Calculus.
